Ideal Cut Diamonds

Ideal Cut is a term used in the diamond industry to describe a diamond that has been cut for maximum brilliance and sparkle. Unlike Color or Clarity, there is very little consensus between the diamond labs, industry experts and people in the trade of what exactly “Ideal Cut” really means.

Even within the same laboratory such as AGS the parameters of Ideal have been changing so how does someone purchase an Ideal Cut diamond? Well first of all there is no such thing as ideal in the sense that there is one perfect set of specifications and you can therefore cut all diamonds to be ideal to those specifications and get the same brilliance every time.

There are various levels of “Ideal Cut” and different ways to measure them. For example with AGS, a diamond that does not have a minimum of excellent symmetry and polish is not eligible for their “0” cut grade. Other labs such as the GIA and EGLUSA will issue their top cut grades to diamonds with symmetry and polish of very good or better.

More importantly the proportions of the diamond and the light performance are typically what determine if a diamond is ideal cut or not. For example GIA has calculated various depth/table/pavilion/crown combinations they feel are excellent (ideal) and have other criteria they use, and based on all the data they collect they issue an overall cut grade, but this grade does not include any light performance results. EGLUSA is now issuing a light performance report for their diamonds and grade the proportions and the finish of the diamonds but do not give an overall cut grade like AGS does. So they present all the results to you and let you decide on your own what’s important to you.

Therefore if you want a diamond you must decide, do you want a diamond cut to ideal proportions? And whose proportions exactly? Do you want a diamond cut with the best finish (symmetry and polish) even though anything higher then Very Good offers no visual gain? Do you want a diamond with high light performance? Do you want all three?

If you want a diamond which meets the toughest light performance, proportions and finish analysis, currently there is only one report on the market, and that is the AGS000 grade. We are more then happy to source out the best AGS000 diamonds on your behalf.

If you’re not looking for the perfect cut diamond on paper, but rather you want the best visual performance or diamond cut to the best proportions and gets our stamp of approval, we are more then happy to assist you in finding that perfect diamond. We’ll search all the AGS 1-2 grade, GIA Very Good to Excellent, and EGLUSA Very Good to Excellent diamonds.

Ideal cut is not a top priority for everyone but you need to be aware that cut performance should be high up on your list when shopping around for a diamond. We are more then happy to assist you should you have any questions related to Ideal Cut diamonds.
